Community College: High School Students

High school students have the opportunity to take classes at a local community college.

What are the benefits?

  • Classes are free for high school students. (Student fees and textbooks may not be included. Check with college.)

  • It's a way to explore a course outside of the high school curriculum.

  • High school students can start earning college units.

  • Students get a taste of college-level coursework and develop academic skills.

What's the difference between Dual Enrollment and Concurrent Enrollment?

Dual Enrollment classes are offered as a partnership between a community college and a high school district. Currently, HBUHSD is partnered with Golden West College to offer a select number of community college classes that allow a student to earn high school credits (for graduation) and earn college units. Classes are offered at HBUHSD sites. For more information, click here.

Concurrent Enrollment allows for a high school student to take a class at a community college. College units are earned. While concurrent enrollment does not earn high school credits, a student can list these classes on a college application and even apply a class toward an A-G requirement.

Steps to Take for Concurrent Enrollment:

This is a general guideline, and steps may vary slightly by community college.

  1. Browse the community college class schedule for the semester you plan to attend. Filter by subjects of interest and select "Open Classes Only." Make sure you meet the prerequisites, if there are any.

For students looking to take a Visual Performing Arts, many of the "f" VPA-approved classes will fall under Art, Dance, Music and Theater.

  2. Apply for admission to the local community college you plan to attend at www.cccapply.org

  3. Complete the Concurrent Enrollment petition that allows for high school students to take a course. Submit to school counselor for approval.
GWC Special High School Release Form (online form)
OCC High School Form (Note: Form is titled Dual Enrollment Form, but no high school credits given) send to schung@hbuhsd.edu
Coastline Special High School Release Form - list Suji Chung, school counselor (email: schung@hbuhsd.edu) on the form

  4. Return the Concurrent Enrollment petition to the college and followup with next steps on when and how to register for the class.
